Thank you for your interest in the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist and the Safe Surgery Student Mentor Project.  This new initiative is aimed at engaging students and faculty of all health professions, throughout the world, in efforts to disseminate the Safe Surgery Checklist.  The project will serve as a vehicle for students to become more engaged in health services delivery and quality improvement research, bridging their clinical experiences with their passion for health reform.  Involvement of these student networks will continue to further expand as new quality initiatives are surfaced and we move forward in improving the quality of care for our patients.

Our growing network of international partners – students, faculty, schools and healthcare organizations – is united by our interest in creating meaningful opportunities for students to contribute to the spread of the Checklist.  We look forward to sharing ideas, resources, and experiences with each other.

Students have already led efforts to disseminate the Checklist globally and have been successful!

  o   Vision
"Students across the world helping to disseminate the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist and partnering to improve healthcare quality"

  o   Mission
The Safe Surgery Student Mentor Project exists to further the dissemination of the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist while engaging students in the broader discussion on healthcare quality improvement.  The Project aims to:
        a) Recruit Student Mentors to act as 'awareness' messengers of the Safe Surgery Checklist to other students and health professions schools
        b) Recruit Student Mentors to act as 'implementation' messengers of the Safe Surgery Checklist to healthcare organizations and practitioners.
        c) Recruit Student Mentors to act as 'data collectors' at the point of care
        d) Create a library of case studies and other publications highlighting student-led dissemination attempts

We are also in the process of developing materials (eg. PowerPoint presentations and How-to Guides, and Case Studies) to post to our website for public consumption, and would welcome your input on any aspect of this project as it evolves.

For more information, please email us at studentsprint@gmail.com
Or post your comments to our blog at www.safesurgerystudentmentorproject.blogspot.com

We look forward to hearing about your efforts and how your group has been able to spread the WHO Safe Surgery Checklist.  Also, we would like to recognize all participants in this project. Please send us information regarding your home institution and who is interested in joining this dissemination effort.

Best regards,
The Safe Surgery Student Mentor Team
